Executive MBA programs target working professionals with 10+ years of experience who can't take 2 years off work. Classes meet on weekends, in weekday intensives, or in modular blocks. Students keep their jobs and salaries throughout the program.

The typical EMBA student is 35-42 years old, manages teams or P&Ls, and wants the credential and network to reach the C-suite. Many have employer sponsorship covering part or all of the tuition.

Cost Reality

EMBA tuition ranges from $60,000 at regional programs to $220,000+ at top-tier programs like Wharton and Kellogg. The total cost is often comparable to full-time MBA tuition, but without the lost salary. This makes the effective cost significantly lower.

Employer sponsorship is common. 40-60% of EMBA students receive partial or full tuition reimbursement from their employers. If your company will pay, the EMBA ROI is almost always positive.

EMBA vs Full-Time MBA

Same degree, different format. At most top schools, the EMBA diploma is identical to the full-time MBA diploma. The difference is experience level (EMBA students are more senior), class format (weekends vs daily), and career switching ability (EMBA doesn't support career pivots).

EMBA networking tends to be more senior. Your classmates are VPs and directors, not analysts and associates. This creates a different kind of network with more immediate business value.

Top EMBA Programs

Wharton, Kellogg, Columbia, Booth, and Duke Fuqua run the most prestigious EMBA programs. Ross and UCLA Anderson are strong on the West Coast. Emory Goizueta and UNC are excellent in the Southeast.
